Design Wall Monday–February 13, 2017

I’ve already shown this several time and although it’s difficult to see progress, there really is.

The differences in this photo and previous ones are, the binding is on and I have done all the stitching in the ditch.  Several years ago I took a machine quilting class from Cindy Needham, she stressed the importance of stitching in every stinkin seam.  So that’s what I try to do.

The other borrowed tip comes from my friend Pat Adair.  Pat often adds her binding after doing some of the basic quilting but before she does some of the more detailed quilting.  It helps by getting rid of the extra fabric/backing/batting out of the way.

Here’s a close up of the faux flange/piping binding that I added.  I love how easy the binding is to do but most of all, I love the design aspect.  It really adds a nice accent to the outer edge.

This is the back of the quilt.  I made a giant 4 patch kaleidoscope block to mimic the front of the quilt.  I like the back almost as much as the front.

Here’s a picture of the actual fabric.  I love the donkey and the bright flowers.  The flowers in the upper left and the lower right remind me of passion fruit flowers (one of my favorites).  I have two passion fruit plants that love the Southern California weather and apparently love where they are planted.  My husband’s not quite so fond of them.  He is constantly having to trim them back.

To see what others are up to this week, check out Judy’s Patchwork Times blog.

Enjoy,

  1. It's looking really good! I just finished a quilt where I tried Pat's "early binding" technique. It's a winner in my book! I had finished most of the SITD so everything was stable, and it really did help to get the loose extra batting and backing out of the way. I also liked having the binding not be the last step.

I'm not completely sold on SITD in every stinkin' seam though...

  2. What a beautiful quilt. It looks like you are very close to the finish line.
