A while back Catherine L. sent me a picture of her Magical Slice and Dice that she made after ordering and receiving a pattern from me. But, look at what she did……….she made a miniature out of it. It’s so darn cute. I just love it.
She doesn’t have the last border on yet but it’s only about 17” x 20” in this picture compared to the full size quilt which is 60” x 85”. Quite a difference I do say.

I still don’t know what I want to call this but I started out attempting to make Hidden Wells blocks using a striped fabric instead of pieced strips. I think it’s turning out to be more of a kaleidoscope but either way, I like it. I made 4 more blocks today and have done some of the prep work to make 12 more.
The other decision I will have to make is whether or not I’ll put the quilt on point or leave it as a straight set and then decide if I should add sashing. As it is now the blocks already kind of look like they are on point. I’ll play with it some more once I have additional blocks made.

P.S. My ukulele class went well, but it was a big reminder I need to practice, practice, practice. I’ll miss next weeks class but I’m sure Marilyn won’t mind if I practice in our hotel room at night……..LOL! Oh yeah! We have another mini retreat with friends next week. Yea!!!!!!!
I am so excited to finally have my Great Granny Square quilt finished and on my bed ready for a good night’s sleep tonight.
I am thrilled with the quilting done by my friend Sue. I used wool batting so you can really see the texture of the quilting. The shams turned out to be just the right size and work great. I am over the top thrilled with everything.
I used the faux flange technique for the binding on the quilt as well as the shams. It added the perfect finishing touch and pulled in all the different colors.

Playing with a Two-fabric Disappearing Pinwheel
I think this layout is my favorite.
Here’s how I made it. I started with 4 – 5” squares, cut them on the diagonal, sewed them into half square triangles and then sewed a nine patch.
I then trimmed the pinwheel block to 8 1/4” ( it needs to be divisible by 3). To do this, I trimmed one side at a time by measuring from the center 4 1/8” and cutting. I then turned the block and trimmed each of the sides.
Once the block is trimmed and measures 8 1/4” I make four more cuts. Measure in from the outside this time and cut at 2 3/4”. Until it looks like this.
Now start playing by rearranging the cut pieces.

The only thing I did was figure out some measurements, it can be made in a variety of sizes, you just have to figure out how to make it divisible by 3.

This week was a good week for my stash reduction efforts. I needed backing for two quilts and binding for one. All of it came out of my stash. Yea!!!!!!!

I did manage to buy three fat quarters but I have a project in mind for them. They’ll be going with me next week when Marilyn and I go to a mini retreat with some friends.
They came from a “new to me” shop, AAA Sewing and Fabric in Lomita, CA. It’s primarily a sewing machines and vacuum cleaner store but they are continually growing their fabric selection. They were the nicest people, I will definitely go back. My friend Frances Moore teaches free motion quilting at AAA.

My friend Sue quilted this on her long-arm machine for me. I used wool batting so you can really see the texture of the quilting. Plus, the quilt turned out really soft and cozy due to the wool.
I added a black flange using a variation of one of the many (faux flange/piping) binding techniques that is floating around the internet. I sometime use this method because it’s fast and easy but in this case I used it because I really felt that little bit of black added a great finishing detail.

This afternoon I started playing with a Disappearing Pinwheel. What’s a Disappearing Pinwheel you ask? Well a while back as I was visiting one of the Blogs I follow I found it. When I told my BFF Marilyn about it she looked at me a little strange when I told her is was a Russian Blog written in Russian. No I don’t read, speak or vaguely understand Russian but I’m real good at looking at pictures. There actually is a translator button on the site but I rarely use it, I just look at the pictures. So this afternoon I’ve been playing.
I used 5” blocks cut on the diagonal to make the pinwheels. Then sewed them together into a nine patch. The only thing tricky is that you need to trim the nine patch to a size devisable by 3. In my case I trimmed the nine patch to 8 1/4”. My hint would be in order to trim your block, measure 4 1/8” from the center and trim each side so that way all 4 sides get trimmed the same and your center stays in the center. Then I cut on all 4 sides at 2 3/4” from the outside edge. After you’ve cut the block apart, have fun arranging and rearranging. Next I’m going to try it just using two fabrics. I’ll let you know how it goes.
