Getting it Done–March 2013

First a recap of February…….

1.  Finish the border for my Great Granny quilt

The quilt top is finished and is now loaded on the long arm of my friend Sue.

2.  Make a proto type of my new bag pattern

Forget about  it………I will no doubt make a new bag but since I’ve decided not to exhibit at Portland’s Spring Market, the pressure is off.

3.  Add the binding to my green and white quilt

Completed and ready to be donated.

4.  Make a Woven Ribbon top

The top is finished and quilted.  I now just need to add the binding.

All and all, I think I had a good February, now it’s time to move on to March …………..and my March goals are:

  1. Figure out and finish the top of my, striped, sort of, Hidden Wells Quilt.

IMG_5602

2.  Make a Diva Frame Wallet.  I bought this in January while visiting City Quilter in New York City.  I have everything gathered together so I shouldn’t have any excuse not to get it done.

IMG_5605

3.  This is a very old quilt that was made as part of an on-line mystery (I think).   Time to dust it off, quilt it and donate it to charity.  Believe it or not I even have the binding ready to go, no more excuses.

IMG_5606

4.  These are left over 5” squares and some solid yardage from a quilt I made a few years ago.  Surely I can figure out how to use this to make something nifty.  I love the fabrics.  Any suggestions?

IMG_5607

That’s enough planning for now.  This month I’m looking forward to another mini-retreat with my Red Hat Lady friends and then a trip to Santa Barbara to teach a workshop and speak at the local guild.  Should be a fun-filled month.

Inspired but Confused

That’s me today, inspired but rather confused.  Back on the 18th I showed these blocks that I had put up on my design wall to inspire me to start working on them again.  Unfortunately, it’s been awhile and I’ve forgotten how I made them.  I typically make a lot of notes when I’m trying something new but in the case my notes consist of a blank page that says something like Hidden Wells from a striped fabric.  That’s it, that is all that is on the page.  Shame, shame on me.

IMG_5602

So this afternoon I started to figure it out.  Here is my first attempt.

IMG_5603

It’s the right idea but still not right. I have more fabric so I’ll continue to play and this time write it down.  In the mean time here is a picture of some of the fabric before it is cut up.

IMG_5604

I know it’s going to be fun once I get my head around it.  I’ll post my progress.

Design Wall Monday–February 25, 2013

An “In and Out (Not Just Another Burger)” table runner is in the process of being quilted but I stuck it up on my design wall for you to see.

IMG_5594

This is a smaller version of this one I showed you last week.  I need another large quilt like I need a hole in my head so I decided to just make a small table runner instead.  These are 12” blocks so it’s just 24” x 48”, perfect for my dining room table.

Stash Report–Week 8–February 24, 2013

I spent a good portion of this past week in Temecula at a quilting retreat.  I had a wonderful time and actually got some sewing done.  I added a couple of borders to my Great Granny Square quilt, assembled a Scrappy Trip Around the World, finished an In and Out table runner and made a cute little binder.  I managed to buy a couple of yards of fabric but I have some plans for that.

Used this Week 3.75

But what’s a blog post without a picture?  Temecula is known for many things, Wineries, the Pechanga Casino, the Nunnery (where the retreat was held), a wonderful Old Town and this……….

Sneak Peek

On Monday my row will be featured on Patchwork Posse as part of the Round Robin, Row Quilt.  I have finished writing the instructions and they’ve been sent off to Becky over at Patchwork Posse so I thought I’d go ahead and give you a sneak peek.

Here’s a close-up of some of the blocks.

Round Robin Winter Wonderland 2013

Becky over at Patchwork Posse has asked me once again to design a row for her Sew-Along.  My row will be published on Monday, February 25, 2013 on the Patchwork Posse Blog.   As usual I’m a little late getting started, although I’ve know for quite sometime exactly what I’m going to do.  I will be a doing a row using a stack and slash method to create a mock crazy patch row.  It should be a lot of fun.  I can’t show you the row yet but in the mean time I can show you the fabrics I think I’ll be using.

IMG_5586

It’s a variety of Kaffee Fassett fabric that I think will work just fine.  Becky is posting a new row every two weeks.  This will be the third row.  If you’re interested in participating check out her blog to see the first two rows that have already been posted.

Final Retreat Project

Here’s a couple of pictures of the final project that I completed while at the Temecula Retreat.  My sister had a pattern for a “Airplane Binder” that we were going to make 4 or 5 years ago on our annual quilting trip to Vegas.  I still had everything in a baggie all ready to be made and never got around to it.  Finally at this retreat I found the time to make it and, Surprise, Surprise, it didn’t take that long and it went together very nicely.

I’m now all ready to design quilts using my Crayola Crayons and my gridded note pad.  Pretty darn cute if I do say so myself.

Design Wall Monday–February 18, 2013

I’m getting ready to head out for a 4 day retreat and looked up at my design wall and it was naked.  I grabbed these UFO blocks and decided to look at them for a while and see if I get inspired.

IMG_5574

The thought behind these blocks was to play with a striped fabric and treat it like a Hidden Wells, but it really looks like a 4 patch kaleidoscope, so I need to figure out how to proceed.  We’ll see what happens to it once I get back home.

A Letty’s Bag Sighting

Last night was my Quilters by the Sea guild meeting and as usual it’s a great time to catch up with all my friends.  Shortly after I got there my friend Caroline came over to show me her new Letty’s Bag.  Love the fabric, love the triangle grommets and love Caroline.

Caroline

Thank you for sharing your new creation with me.  It’s always fun to have a Letty’s bag sighting.

Happy Valentine’s Day

I have a few quilts around here that have hearts on them but I decided to share this one with you today.

IMG_5563

I made this several years ago using a Jackie Robinson pattern.  It hangs in my dining room and is the most touched quilt I own.  Everyone loves to play with the 3-D prairie points that form the center heart.

I have a guild meeting tonight so I think my hubby and I will have a nice dinner tomorrow night to celebrate.

A Mini Shop Hop With Friends

Yesterday I went on a mini shop hop with my friends Vicki and Marilyn.  The purpose was to drop off our guild’s brochure.  The result was that we each managed to support the local quilt shop economy.  We made it to 6 local quilt shops and 1 “new find”.  While we were at Bear’s Quilt Shop visiting with Vivs he told us that Purl Soho (in NYC) ships from a location in Tustin, CA and they were open to the public, so guess where we went next.  Thank goodness Vivs was right behind us because when we got to the location and look for suite “B” it wasn’t there but right when we were getting ready to leave Vivs pulled up and told us it was suite “D” and sure enough, there it was.  I really should get my hearing checked.  Embarrassed smileIt’s not a quilt shop but they have wonderful fabrics, gorgeous yarn and notions.  In fact I think they have everything the store in Soho has just not nearly as glamorous, but we didn’t care.  I bought a 1/2 yard of Airplane fabric by Enchino.

So with all that being said, I didn’t do to much damage, 4 fat quarters, 1/2 yard fabric, needles, and hexagon fabric.

San Fernando Valley Quilt Association

I had a great time last night, hopefully all these wonderful quilters did too.

IMG_5554

Bill is the President and he was really a wonderful gentleman.  He told all the ladies that unfortunately he couldn’t afford to buy them each a rose for Valentine’s Day so instead he made a banner to share with them all.

IMG_5552

Here’s a picture of Bill with my Wednesday Wacko’s group quilt hanging behind him and the SFVQA quilt on the podium.

Thank you for a wonderful couple of days, I enjoyed you all.

Design Wall Monday–February 11, 2013

I’m in a hotel room so my design wall is actually a counter top.

IMG_5545

I’m starting over with this quilt using the gray and white fabric as my new background.  Look at all those wonderful strips that I bought from my friend Pat several years ago.  They are perfect for this project.

Looks like I’ll have several uninterrupted hours to prep blocks and sew before I have to get ready for my truck show tonight at San Fernando Valley Quilt Association.  I’m also planning to sneak in a trip to Candy’s Quiltworks.
