Design Wall Monday–July 31, 2017

As the month comes to a close I thought I’d share what’s up on my design wall.  A couple of weeks ago while attending The Cotton Patchers friendship group gathering one of the members, Bea, shared a couple of quilt tops she had made using stripes.  After I got home I remember buying some stripes to make the exact same quilt.  It’s a “pattern”, so to speak, that’s been around for a while.  But a while back Jenny from Missouri Star made a YouTube video reminding me of how to make it.  So out came my fabric and I started playing. 

Jenny’s demo shows using 1 1/4 yards of fabric but that makes a very small quilt.  I had enough to make it much larger.  So far I have 2/3 of the blocks made and the last 1/3 is cut out just waiting to be sewn together. 

Here’s the striped fabric I started with.

This is such fun.  Once this is done I see more in my future.

Grandma’s Kitchen–Block 5 - 25

Today was the day that Pat Sloan revealed Block 5 of her Grandma’s Kitchen Series.  This one was inspired by glasses and cups.  Pat talks about the aluminum cups her grandma had.  I certainly remember them from my childhood and my grandchildren remember them from their childhood.  I still have at least 8 – 10 of them in my cupboard and the kids used to always us them.

Emily’s Graduation Quilt

Back on May 25th my granddaughter Emily graduation from college.  As her gift we are taking her with us on a trip to New York the end of September.  I had thought about making her a quilt but nothing jumped out at me until I remembered a quilt kit I had purchased a year ago from City Quilter in NYC.  When I heard they were closing I had purchased the kit and put it away.  So with a New York City trip planned, I decided to make the City Quilter kit for her. 

The top was finished and gifted for her graduation but it still needed to be quilted and the binding added.  As of this morning, it is complete and waiting for her to pick it up.

It’s hard to see the fabric but it depicts the various NYC sites, Empire State Building, Central Park, Brooklyn Bridge, etc.  Here’s a close-up. 

And here is the label that Bear’s Quilt Shop embroidered on the back.

Grandma’s Kitchen–Block 4/25

Pat Sloan posted block 4 this morning.  I was anxious to get it made but I had another commitment so I didn’t get to it until this afternoon.

Design Wall Monday–July 17, 2017

I returned on Saturday from a wonderful week of sewing with friends in Las Vegas.  We started off Monday morning at 9:00 and finished up Friday afternoon.  On Tuesday I taught my Sassy Scrappy Log Cabin and on Wednesday I shared a couple of small projects.  In between teaching and visiting I managed to work on a couple of things and thought I’d share them this morning.

This is a cute little table runner that is made using a free pattern of Bonnie Hunters.  Many of the gals were making full sized quilts but I had a few fat quarters that I had picked up either at Walmart or Tuesday morning so decided to make this little cutie.

On Tuesday I taught my Sassy, Scrappy Log cabin.  This is my sample and here are some of the blocks made by others.  Just like a traditional log cabin, these blocks can be made many different ways.  Here’s just a few.

There were more but this gives you a pretty good idea. 

One of the small projects was a table runner made using 1 charm pack.  I purchased this winter themed one and made this. 

I really liked how simple this was to make.  I see more of these in my future. 

I also worked on what I thought was going to be a Wedding quilt.  That is until I went to a fabulous quilt shop in Henderson, NV, Quiltique. but more about it later.

Here are some of the blocks that I’ve made.  You’ll see that the top two have been trimmed the others are waiting their turn.

I’m sure I spent time working on a few other things but that’s enough for now.

Grandma’s Kitchen–Block 2/25

Yesterday was the day that Pat Sloan posted the second block of her Grandma’s Kitchen weekly quilt along.  It’s a fairly simple block, but I like it.

Grandma’s Kitchen–Block 1

I decided to play along with Pat Sloan and make her Grandma’s Kitchen quilt blocks.  It just started last week and as I understand it there will be a total of 25 blocks.  She will be releasing 1 block a week.  The 1st one is a 12” finished block but she has said they all may or may not all be the same size.  So we’ll see as we go along.  You can read more about it here. 

In the mean time, I made my first block.
