Design Wall Monday–1/31/11

Tomorrow is the first day of February and I realize I don’t have a Red heartValentine’s Day Red hearttable topper or table runner for my dining room table.  So here’s what I’m doing to fix it.

IMG_2766

It only took me a few minutes to cut it out using my Accuquilt Go.  I’ll get it sewn together today and hopefully quilted right away.

A Few of My Favorite Things–Road to California 2011

This is the tote that was given to the registered attendees.

IMG_2754

I couldn’t resist this tote bag, it looks like an old flour sack with a flour tortilla recipe on it.

IMG_2755

Just what I needed, more fabric, but I love it and can visualize all kinds of uses for it.

Just a Few Opening Remain

I’ve talked many times about the Two Wacky Women Retreat business I partner in with my BFF Marilyn.   We are hosting a machine quilting retreat in March with Frances Moore, machine quilter extraordinaire.   Unfortunately we’ve had some very sad news recently that has left us with a few openings.

Here’s a sample of Frances’ work.

IMG_1015

She does all of her quilting on her home sewing machine and is a big advocate of quilting your own quilts.  This is the forth retreat we have facilitated for her so I know from experience what a wonderful teacher she is.  It’s amazing how quickly she has you quilting with confidence.

If you’d like more information, there is information here, or email Robin or Marilyn for more details.

Letty’s Bag Teacher–Betty Elliot

I love to teach my patterns but I’m thrilled when others love to teach my patterns too.  A perfect example is Betty Elliot who has been teaching my Letty’s Bag pattern for quite some time.  She stopped by the house the other day to pick up a pattern order and while she was here I managed to get a picture of one of her Letty’s Bag samples.

IMG_2745

Isn’t it just wonderful.  I love the stacked buttons, the polka-dots and the orange grommets.

Betty teaches at two locations, Norwalk Vacuum and Sewing and  Moore’s in Huntington Beach.   If you take a class from her, be sure to tell her I sent you her way.

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s a super duper seam ripper. . . . .well kind of!

So while at the store yesterday, I couldn’t pass this up.  I’d heard about it but hadn’t had a chance to try it, until now.
Here’s what it looks like at the store.

They say it’s a beauty trimmer, but we know better.  Here it is out of the package.

And, a close-up of the blade.

Once you put a AAA battery in, you can turn it on and go to town, reverse sewing.
IMG_2750
Once you’re done, snap the lid on and put it safely away until the next time you need it.
IMG_2746
I love it.  It’s cute and it works really well.  I found mine at the grocery store but I’m sure they have them at drug stores, Target and probably even Wal-Mart.  BTW, they had several different designs but I liked this one.

Texas Braid

Yesterday’s post I showed you a picture of the Texas Braid that I am working on.  Today I thought I’d share pictures of Bonnie Hunter’s quilt and some of the braids that other people in the class were working on.

IMG_2730

This is Bonnie’s quilt.  It’s huge.  It fits her king size bed and in fact she took it off her bed to bring it with her for the class.  Apparently her husband was at home and was really missing it.  She never said but I hope she but another quilt on the bed since they live in No. Carolina and it’s “cold” there.

IMG_2729

Here’s a close –up of her Texas Braid.  She used a huge amount of scraps to make it.  She emphasized the fact that she chose a solid red (instead of a print) for the cornerstone.   She didn’t use any reds in the braid but did use some burgundy and of course every other color under the sun.  It’s just lovely!

This is my friend Terri’s on the left, Marilyn’s in the middle and Pat’s on the right.

Bless her heart Terri really did a great job of going into her stash to make her braid.

Marilyn cheated (like me) and used a fat quarter tower for her dark side (but it’s going to be gorgeous).

Pat did a great job of pulling from her stash, using blacks with white and whites with black, and a variety of brights for the cornerstones.

Here’s Pam’s, entirely made from polka-dots.

IMG_2742

Bonnie is one of the nicest people you’d ever want to take a class from.  She was a real delight.

IMG_2744

All I can say is, Bonnie must be really, really tall because surely I can’t be that short.

Design Wall Monday–1/24/11

Check it out . . . . .

IMG_2743

This is from my Texas Braid class with Bonnie Hunter last Saturday.  I am using Moda’s Central Park fabric for the dark side, a dark brown batik for the cornerstone and a variety of scappy whites for the light side.  I love the fabrics, I love the results and I love having what I call “mindless” sewing to do.

Tomorrow I’ll share pictures of Bonnie’s quilt as well as some other braids from the class.   In the mean time, check out what others have on the design walls over at Judy’s Patchwork Times Blog.

Mary Lou Weidman–2 Days of Creativity

It’s Sunday morning, I’m sitting in my living room, drinking a cup of coffee and reflecting back on the last 4 days.  Wednesday, Marilyn and I packed the car with all our “stuff” and headed to Ontario, CA for the Road to California  Quilt Show.  We managed to stop at 4 quilt shops along the way before meeting up with 4 of our friends to start our annual trip.

Thursday morning, bright and early, Marilyn and I headed over to the convention center to begin a 2 day class with Mary Lou Weidman.   The class we took was Story Quilts.  If you don’t know Mary Lou, you are really missing out.  She is absolutely delightful, full of energy and a true inspiration.  Her style is very folk art, whimsical and humorous and tells a story.

Typically Mary Lou teaches this class as a 5 day workshop so this was a  2 day snapshot.  The first day was spent working on our borders, making  Hoochy Mama Blocks.   We then moved on to start planning our own stories.  This is the part I have the most difficulty with.  I have my story and I now have to work on actually drawing it out so that I can continue the process.

Here’s several pictures of some of Mary Lou’s quilts and a picture of some of my Hoochy Mama blocks.

IMG_2719 IMG_2718 IMG_2713

I’m not thrilled with my blocks although I love Wonky blocks.  After looking at many of Mary Lou’s quilts, I’ve decided to make my border out of Wonky log cabin blocks.  I have my “Story” thought out and have some tentative ideas on how to lay it out on a quilt but this is clearly a long term project.  For now I’ll start working on the border blocks and continue to work on what exactly will go on the quilt.

Tomorrow I’ll tell you about Saturday’s class with Bonnie Hunter.

Letty’s Bag Sighting

I am at Road to California this week attending classes, shopping and just wondering around having a great time.  It’s so much fun running in to people you know and running in to new people.

As I was waking the floor yesterday these two gals saw my laminated cotton, Tula Pink, Letty’s Bag and stopped me to ask if I made it.  I told them yes, of course.  Well, they were so excited to show me their bags.

IMG_2702

Aren’t they cute?  Both the bags and the girls.  The one on the left is made out of Pendleton Wool and lined with Dubioni  Silk.   The one on the right had a wonderful fabric flower instead of a button.

The show is wonderful.  I’ll give an update at a later time.

A Mickey Letty’s Bag

I recently received this email from Hannah Wilde, who I think lives in Wyoming.

megan's Mikey purse2

“I thought you might like to see the purse I made for my daughter from your pattern, Letty's bag.  I bought the pattern at Timeless Quilts in Anaheim when my daughter, granddaughter and I were out visiting my best friend from highschool...Thanks for an awesome pattern.

Hannah Wilde”

My friend Sue works at Timeless Quilts and it is located very close to Disneyland.  As you can imagine, they get visitor from all over.  Doesn’t Mickey look happy?
