Fabric Flower Fun

Today while riding in the car I made a fabric flower using a tutorial on the Sew Prim Khris Blog

The pedals start out as circles made using a CD as the template.  The flower ends quite large but really cute.  I think I’ll try making another one but maybe a little smaller.

Thank you Khris for the great tutorial.

This is the front.

And here is the back.

I need to put a pin on the back so that I can wear it, so tomorrow I’ll go shopping.

I fell off the wagon – More Letty’s Bags

What can I say, I have a serious illness and it’s called making Letty’s Bags and sharing bags made by others with all of you.

First up. . . . . I couldn’t stand it and I made another Letty’s Bag to showcase some fabric.

IMG_1038

It was just speaking to me “make another bag” it was saying.  So what was a girl to do, I made another one.

IMG_1092

For some reason it’s not as bright and vibrant in the pictures as it is in person.  It’s a happy bag!

This last week while at my granddaughter Emily’s H.S. soccer game, I ran in to one of my customers, Kris.  Kris is the owner of Cozy Cottage in Brea, California.  I was so excited to hear that the “Letty’s Bag” pattern is one of their top sellers.  Then she opened up the back of her car to show me this.

Several of her friends got together and made Letty’s Bags.  This one is hers.  Isn’t it wonderful.  If you’re in the area, stop by and say hello or visit her website.  Thank you Kris for being a great supporter.  BTW, Kris’s daughters team (Esperanza High School JV) beat us, darn it!  Oh well we have another game against them in a few weeks, maybe we can get even.

And then, I received an email from Arlene Millett (no blog) and she shared this with me.

Arlenes Letty'sBag

Hi Robin,

Here is a picture of a "Letty's Bag" that I just made for our soon-to-be daughter-in-law.

I used leftover fabrics from a table runner that I had previously made for her.

It's about 15 high x 16 wide x 4 thick with 1 inch ID grommets.

I REALLY enjoyed the retreat and Billie Lauder.

Thanks again for a great time!

Arlene Millett

Great job Arlene, thank you for sharing.

And last but not least, Kathy Cina is at it again.  Here is her latest creation.  She’s almost as bad as me.  You can visit Kathy’s Blog and see pictures of her Letty’s Bags and her darling daughter Charlie.

Wacko Quilts

Just about every Wednesday night my friendship group, The Wednesday Wackos, meet at a local high school.  We are fortunate that the husband of one of our members works at the school and has received permission from the principal allowing us the use of a classroom every week.

Last night was a special night.  We hadn’t been together on Wednesday for quite some time although quite a few of us went to Road to California together.

On New Year’s Eve day my friend Pam (you can visit her Blog here) fell and broke a bone right by her shoulder/arm socket.  Marilyn rallied the troops and a group quilt was started.  Marilyn collected blocks from everyone and quickly assembled the quilt top.  She then turned it over to Sue (no blog) to quilt on her long arm.  Then it was turned over to Margie (also no blog) to add the binding.  Last night we presented Pammy with her “Hug” quilt.

That is Pam on the right and Margie on the left.

Speaking of Margie.  She is our queen of hand appliqué.  Last night she brought her latest project that she has been working on.  This is all hand appliquéd and she did all that work in about two weeks time.  I told you she’s the queen!

Here’s the top, along with pictures of some of the blocks.

Margie is the same wonderful person that made me my Halloween wall hanging that I Blogged about here.  Gotta love that girl.

How to pack for a retreat.

When we pack to vend at a quilt show, we rent a truck and pack everything we need into it.  But when we host a retreat we take two cars and stuff everything we need in side.

I thought you might get a kick out of seeing how much stuff I can pack in a Honda Accord.  This is just half, the other half was in Marilyn’s car.  Thank goodness I didn’t have a passenger.

I suppose I could have fit a few more things in but I really did need to see out my rear view and side mirrors. smile_regular

Retreat Projects

Today I want to share a few pictures taken at the Two Wacky Women retreat over the weekend.

IMG_1037

Part of their welcome package was a pattern and kit to make a “Not Just Another Notepad”.  Yvonne Lee was the first to make hers.  If you look closely at the bottom right you will see that she used her sewing machine (Bernina I think) to embroider her name on it.  I’m going to steal this idea in the future.

This is Michelle Rosgen and she made her very first quilt top.  Michelle flew in from Maryland and we were thrilled to have her.

IMG_1061

Here she is with her quilt.  It’s hard to see but she had this fabric that she loved and used it as a center medallion and then surrounded it with four patches she made using one of Billie Lauders technique.

IMG_1066

Notice Michelle’s flip flops.  She’s originally from Southern California and grew up wearing flip flops so since it was snowy and cold in Maryland (where she lives now) she was determined to wear her flip flops even if it was cold and rainy over the weekend.

IMG_1065

Here is Jerri Reed showing off her top that she also made using Billie’s method of making scrappy four patches.  Jerri has become one of our “regulars” and will be joining us again in October.  Yea!!!!!

IMG_1067

Here’s my dear friend Caroline Finley showing off her “LLB”, Letty’s Little Bag that she made.  This was her first time installing the grommets and they came out perfect.

IMG_1068

Arlene Millett needed a wedding quilt right away and decided to make a “Simple Rails”.  She was able to make this in between working on other projects.  She was thrilled to have it finished and ready to be quilted.  (There is a free pattern available, see the link on the right sidebar.)

IMG_1069

Judi Smith recently won a “boat load” (over 600) fat quarters at her guilds auction.  This barely made a dent but here is what she did with some of them, once again using Billie’s method of making scrap four patches.

There were 24 of us at the retreat so this is just a small sampling of what was accomplished.  We had a lot of fun.

Next up, I’ll show you what I worked on and how we pack for a retreat like this.

Rain or No Rain – It’s Retreat Time

As many of you know, it’s been raining and raining here in Southern California.  I’m sure the rest of the world thinks we’re wimps but in our defense we just never get this much rain and our streets and drainage system just isn’t designed to handle it.  But the show must go on.

This weekend Two Wacky Women are hosting a retreat featuring Billie Lauder as our guest instructor.  Marilyn and I will be leaving in just a little while so that we can get set-up before our guests arrive.  Yesterday we had to pack up the cars with all our fabric, kits, notions and retreat supplies.  We manage to load everything between storms and without getting wet.  I’m not so sure we’ll be as lucky this morning.

The featured project for the weekend will be working with 5” and 10” squares, as well as 2 1/2” strips.  Billie has a new book coming out in the spring so hopefully some of the blocks/quilts made this weekend will make it into it.

As the facilitators Marilyn and I probably won’t have time to sew but just in case, here’s what I’m taking.

IMG_1032

All Kaffe, and mostly purchased last weekend at Road to California.

I’ll be taking pictures and posting throughout the weekend.  So stay dry and stay tuned.

Quilting Makes a Difference

This will be my final post about the Road to California Quilt Show, at least for this year.  Along with all the quilts that are entered in the show there are always a variety of special exhibitions.  This year one of the exhibitions was “Quilting Makes a Difference”.  There were 23 entries and each was totally unique and wonderful.

Below I am going to share just 8 of the quilts.  Some of them will have just 1 photo and for some there will be a second photo showing a close-up.  You should be able to click on the pictures to enlarge them so that you can see more of the detail.

You will notice each person was given an identical yellow and blue quilt top to quilt any way they chose.  They were probably about 24” x 24”.  It’s amazing to see the different approaches.

Here we go -

I wish I could have shown you all 23 of the quilts, but I think that’s going a little overboard.  Hope you’ve enjoyed your trip to Road to California with me.  I enjoyed having you tag along.
